Christian, Jewish, and Islamic Faith Leaders in Dialogue

FUMC Pasadena
SpiritSeekers Adult Class presents

FAMILY REUNION
Christian, Jewish, and Islamic Faith Leaders in Dialogue

Sundays, May 6th & May 13th, 2012
8:30 AM
in the
FUMC Pasadena Chapel

Rev. Jerry Campbell, President of Claremont School of Theology; Rabbi Mel Gottlieb; and Imam Jihad Turk will answer faith questions and discuss the creation of new Claremont Lincoln University, the world's first interreligious university.

A new kind of University, Claremont Lincoln is an interdisciplinary, multicultural and multireligious call to action on behalf of humankind…a place that will educate people of many traditions, side by side, so as all may flourish in a multireligious world.

The vision for Claremont Lincoln University is a spark of optimism for the times we live in.

Join us for this two session conversation on this unique graduate school doing what at one time seemed the impossible – to find the common threads among religious and ethical traditions while honoring the distinctiveness of each.

The SpiritSeekers Sunday morning class for adults offers short-term interest topics and special series relevant to our faith.  Normally meeting at 9:00 AM, this two-part series will begin at 8:30 AM.  This program is free and open to the public.  Light snacks and coffee and childcare will be available.

Does prayer change us or does God?

Announcing an adult daytime prayer group in Pasadena.

Prayer: Does it make any difference?  Does prayer change us... or God... or both?

Announcing a 6 week daytime Bible study course exploring prayer.

Beginning Thursday, April 26 until May 31, our weekday class starts 10:30 am at FUMC Pasadena Church, 500 E. Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena CA in the upstairs Adult Lounge in the Education Wing.

Lead by John Evans, in this class we will work to answer the whether prayer changed anything.  Together, we explore the best way to pray or whether we should pray at all.  Over the six class meetings, we will discuss several key aspects of prayer - how to pray, what prayers can do and how we can feel better about them.  Additionally,  we will utilize the inspirational photographs of the Rockey Mountains from Philip Yancy to lead us through our prayer meditations.

If you've ever wrestled with the question of prayer this short course could be the answer.

To sign up for this class contact John Evans at (626) 303-4654 or Rev. Debbie Gara (626) 796-0157 or by email at dgara@fumcpasadena.org

Brahms German Requiem at First Church

Chorale Bel Canto, German Requiem, Brahms
THREE CHOIRS TO PRESENT
 JOHANNES BRAHMS’ EIN DEUTCHES REQUIEM
AT PASADENA'S FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, MAY 19TH, 2012
PASADENA, APRIL 7, 2012 — The final concert of Chorale Bel Canto's 30th season will take place at First United Methodist Church in Pasadena on May 19th, at 4:00 p.m. ( 500 East Colorado Ave, Pasadena CA )
Chorale Bel Canto, under the direction of Stephen Gothold will be performing Brahms’ German Requiem. Joining the Chorale for this concert, are the Chamber singers of Rio Hondo College (Linda Brown, conductor), and the Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church. Featured soloists are soprano Melissa McIntosh-Landis and baritone Joseph Lim.
Critically acclaimed for its structure and depth, audiences have long appreciated the requiem's sincere, tender beauty and lyrical compassion. Melissa McIntosh Landis, soprano, is an accomplished recitalist and concert artist.  She has been a guest soloist from coast to coast appearing in Carnegie Hall with the New York City Chamber Orchestra and on the stage of Los Angeles' Walt Disney Concert Hall.  Based in Los Angeles, she is a returning soloist for Chorale Bel Canto, most recently having sung Mendelssohn's Elijah.

Joseph Lim, graduate of the University of Southern California received the 2010 Encouragement Awards from the Marilyn Horne Song Competition and the Loren L. Zachary National Competition. He has sung Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Silvano in Un Ballo in Maschera, and the title role of Don Giovanni with Seoul Metropolitan Opera, and Budd in Britten’s Albert Herring, and Friedrich in Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot with USC Opera.
KUSC personality Kimberlea Daggy will present a pre-concert discussion of the piece at 3:15 in the Sanctuary.
