Family Pageant Prop Workshop November 3rd
The Arts Committee invites families and other FUMC friends are invited to come work under the guidance of Doug Rogers to make props and costume bits for our children’s Christmas pageant.  We will begin at 9 am on Saturday 11/3 in Great Hall and work through the morning.  Light breakfast will be provided.  There should be lots of fun paper mache and other opportunities for kids and parents and friends to help with.

Ernie Ozsvath Art Show November 4th
The Arts Committee invites you to a show of the pen and ink art of Ernie Ozsvath will be shared during coffee hour on Sunday 11/4.  Enjoy his detail designs of Porsche vehicles and local Pasadena buildings.

Family Fall Floral Workshop November 11th
The Arts Committee invites you to come make a floral arrangement using dried and fresh flowers to use during the Thanksgiving season.  The workshop will be in the Grades 2-4 Sunday School room on Sunday, 11/11 at 12 noon for a cost of $7 per arrangement.  Fun for both kids and adults!  Sign up during coffee hour.

Christmas Eclectic Concert December 11th
Tuesday, December 11, the Arts Committee and the Drama Committee invite friends and families to a concert and storytelling in the Chapel.  Children can wear pjs and enjoy hot chocolate, cookies and a book gift.  Handbells, traditional stories including “The Velveteen Rabbit” and more will be on the program.

Children’s Fall Habitat for Humanities Mission Project
Be on the lookout for our Sunday School children bake sales on November 4th and 11th as they raise money to support Habitat for Humanity.  They will also be collecting spare change in their Habitat houses.

Art in our Lives - Creche Display
Once again, the Arts Committee will be sponsoring a creche display during Advent on Sunday, December 23, during coffee hour.  Please consider sharing a traditional creche that your family enjoys.

Harvest Festival comes to FUMC Pasadena

Families and Friends - FUMC Harvest Festival and ArtWalk Weekend is Around the Corner!

Mark your calendars for some good Fall fun for families and friends of all ages.  

Friday, October 12th, from 7-7:30 pm, family and friends are invited to Pumpkin Tales, a spooky event of treats, crafts and stories on the Colorado Patio.  

At 7:30 pm, venture into our chapel to hear stories by Poe and others presented in a radio theater presentation featuring The Legend of Sleepy Hollow while the youth make chalk art on the patio.

Then Friends and Family, stop by First United Methodist Church of Pasadena on Saturday. October 13th, to enjoy our Harvest Festival and Lunch.  From here, will will fan out to visit our local museums during the Pasadena Art Walk Festival.

Our Harvest Festival opens at 10:30 am with lunch served from 11 am to 12:30 pm.  We will host crafts, decorations, vintage items, baked goods, filled pinatas and much more.  Also on tap for Saturday is a special art project that the church youth will be making on the Colorado Patio with docent tours being offered at 11am.

What a great time to bring friends to celebrate in the life of the church with a visit to local museums for free. Be sure to stop by the youth activity table on El Molina and do a mosaic craft with them!

Harvest Festival sales will continue into coffee hour after worship in the 14th.  .

Suspense-filled Tales Told:  This year's fall intergenerational drama opportunity will be an eclectic evening of suspense tales presented by interested members and friends by well-known American and English authors such as Poe, Irving and others.  The evening performance will be at 7:30 pm on Friday, in the FUMC Pasadena chapel and on the FUMC Colorado Courtyard.

Change the World: Our Call to Serve Speaker Series

First United Methodist Church Pasadena Spiritseekrs invites you to attend their Fall speaker series - Change the World: Our Call to Serve.

The series is a five week program sponsored by the FUMC Adult Ministry beginning Sunday, October 14, and running each Sunday evening through November 11, 2012.  The program begins at 5:30 PM in the Church lounge. 

This timely series will focus on our Christian call to serve one another in our church, in our community, in our world.  Dr. Marjorie Suchocki, professor emerita from Claremont School of Theology and co-director of the Center for Process Studies, will speak on October 14.  In subsequent weeks, panels will show how others are answering God's call.  Dr. Helene Slessarev-Jamir, professor of Ethics, Politics and Society at Claremont School of Theology and author of "Prophetic Activism:  Progressive Religious Justice Movements in Contemporary America," will close the series on November 11.

Each session starts with an old-fashioned Methodist potluck, followed by a speaker or panel, and ending with evocative discussion.

The Drowsy Chaperone comes to Pasadena

Mark your calendars now to come see the summer musical, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE!  Performances are Wednesday, July 25 through Saturday July 28 at 7:30 p.m.  Featuring our very own FUMC Pasadena Youth, the show is a wonderful tribute to the golden age of musical theater.

The play is free but if you want the best seats in the house, come join us before the show for a delicious dinner served in our tranquil cloister and receive priority theater seating.  Dinner is served at 6:00 p.m. and the cost is $12 per person.

Tickets for “Dinner in the Cloister” are now on sale every Sunday after church during coffee hour.  They can also be purchased through the church office (626-796-0157) or contact Andrea Lussier () or Claudia Bailey.

Also, please bring donations of canned tuna, canned chili, peanut butter, disposable razors and deodorant to donate to our social service office.

Open Door Sunday - July 15

Open Door Sunday is coming July 15th at FUMC Pasadena 

The FUMC Pasadena Arts Committee invites you to Open Door Sunday - a mid day event featuring food, music and art in the Colorado Blvd., patio following worship on July 15 from 11 to 12:30pm. 

Our goal is to meet and get to know our neighbors and live our creed of "open heart, open mind, open door!"  We encourage everyone to bring family and friends to help us welcome the community and introduce them to our inviting church.

Artwork displayed will come from our members and from class given by our very own congregation.

Music by the Jazz Afro beat ensemble Earthcake will on hand as will a number of children's activities such as face painting and a sanctuary scavenger hunt for families.  Docent tours of the nearly 100 year old historic church will also be made available.

Following the Open Door celebration, be sure to stay for the Arnel DePano performance at 1pm.

Incompatible with Christian Teaching

Incompatible with Christian Teaching - FUMC Monday Night Movies

FUMC Movie Night returns Monday, July 30, featuring the film Incompatible with Christian Teaching, Sponsored by First Church Adult Ministries.

Join us for an evening of film, food, discussion, and compassion.  

Incompatible with Christian Teaching is a documentary film In 1972, the United Methodist Church added language to the Discipline stating that "[t]he practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching."  In 1984, the UMC added that no "self-avowed practicing homosexual" could be ordained.  In 1996, the UMC adopted into church law the rule that "ceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions shall not be conducted by our ministers and shall not be conducted in our churches."

With the 2008 General Conference as its background, this feature-length documentary by AnneP. Brown details the stories of clergy and laity, LGBT persons and straight allies, after delegates failed to strike this language from the Discipline.

Although Pasadena FUMC has voted to join the movement opposing UMC policy as a Reconciling Congregation, the vote rejecting changes in the language of the Discipline at the 2012 General Conference this April renews the pain shared by many LGBT and straight persons in our congregation.  Thus Incompatible with Christian Teaching is a timely reminder of our congregation's call to share God's all-encompassing love.

Of Gods and Men - FUMC Monday Night Movies

FUMC Movie Night returns this Monday, June 25, featuring the film Of Gods and Men, Sponsored by First Church Adult Ministries.

Of Gods and Men is a 2010 French drama film directed by Xavier Beauvois and starring Lambert Wilson and Michael Lonsdale. The film centers on the monastery of Tibhirine where nine Trappist monks lived in harmony with the largely Muslim population of Algeria until the break out of the Algerian Civil War.

Three Free Organ Concerts in Pasadena

THREE PASADENA CHURCHES BEGIN FREE PIPE-ORGAN SERIES

PASADENA, February 10, 2012 — Three Pasadena churches and their organists will join forces for “Pipe Organs Inspire” - free-admission organ concerts on March 17, March 31 and April 14 in the Playhouse District of downtown Pasadena.
 

The series will begin March 17 at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 500 East Colorado Blvd. The second concert will be March 31 at 7:30 p.m. at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 80 Oakland St. The series will conclude on April 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, 585 East Colorado Blvd.

Each of the church’s organists — Ae-Kyong Kim (FUMC), David Wolfe (FCCS) and Timothy Howard (PPC) — will perform on all three programs, playing music selected especially for the particular instrument. All concerts will be free of admission charges; voluntary offerings will be taken at each event.

“Our goal,” says Todd Alan, series coordinator, “was for our churches to collaborate in a unique way that would offer high-quality programs for the community and beyond, giving people a chance to hear three magnificent instruments in churches that they may never have considered entering before.”

MARCH 17 — First United Methodist Church, Pasadena

Host organist: Ae-Kyong Kim

Ae-Kyong Kim has been organist at FUMC since 2003 and served in similar positions at Wilshire United Methodist Church, Immanuel Presbyterian Church and L.A. Open Door Presbyterian Church. A native of Seoul, she holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in organ performance from USC where she also studied choral conducting.

Kim’s selections on the March 17 concert will be Mozart’s Fantasy in F Minor, K. 608, and three movements from Charles-Marie Widor’s Symphony No. 6. On the program, Wolfe will play music by J.S. Bach and Clarence Mader and Howard will perform music by Mendelssohn and Buxtehude.

FUMC’s organ was originally built in 1923 by the E.M. Skinner Co. It was remodeled in 1955 by Aeolian-Skinner and in 1974 by Manuel Rosales. It has four manuals and 65 ranks of pipes.

MARCH 31 — First Church of Christ, Scientist, Pasadena

Host organist: David Wolfe

David Wolfe held his first church organist position at the age of 13. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Music from Fresno State and then went to Europe, where he studied under Parisian organist Daniel Roth and received the Konzertreife (Performer’s Certificate) in Organ at the Musikhochschule des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken, Germany. Upon his return to the United States, Wolfe completed the Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance, with specializations in Organ, Counterpoint, Music History and Jazz Studies at University of Southern California.

On the March 31 program, Wolfe will play music by Gaston Litaize and Maurice Duruflé and César Franck’s Chorale No. 1 in E Major. Kim will perform music by J.S. Bach and Alexandre Guilmant, while Howard will play selections by George Thalben-Ball, Seth Bingham and Herbert Howells.

The organ at First Church of Christ Scientist, Pasadena, was originally built by Murray Harris Co. in 1909, then remodeled by Schantz Organs in 1964 and Kenneth Simpson in 1967. It contains three manuals, 48 stops and 51 ranks of pipes.

APRIL 14 — PasadenaPresbyterian Church

Host organist: Timothy Howard

Timothy Howard has been organist at Pasadena Presbyterian Church for six years and Director of Music for the past four. Prior to coming to Pasadena Presbyterian, he was associate organist-choirmaster at All Saints Church, Pasadena, for 13 years. He is also a lecturer in music at Cal State Northridge and head of the school’s organ program.

Howard holds a Doctor of Music Arts degree, with honors, from USC and also has degrees from Westminster Choir College and Biola University. In addition to being a noted organist and conductor, he has composed organ scores for the silent films “Nosferatu,” “From the Manger to the Cross,” and “The Life and Passion of  Jesus Christ” and other works.

On April 14, Howard will play J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in B Minor, BWV 544, and the final three movements of Louis Vierne’s Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 42, No. 2. Kim will play music by Marcel Dupré and Wolfe will perform selections by Widor and Olivier Messiaen.

PPC’s organ was originally built by Murray Harris Co. in 1908. A new organ, incorporating some of Harris’ work, was begun by Aeolian-Skinner Co. in 1947 and completed in 1961. Subsequent remodeling was undertaken by Casavant Frères Ltée. in 1979 and Schantz Organ Co. in 2003. The organ now has four manuals with 111 ranks of pipes, making it one of the larger instruments in Southern California.
