Brahms German Requiem at First Church

THREE CHOIRS TO PRESENT

 JOHANNES BRAHMS’ EIN DEUTCHES REQUIEM

AT PASADENA'S FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, MAY 19TH, 2012

PASADENA, APRIL 7, 2012 — The final concert of Chorale Bel Canto's 30th season will take place at First United Methodist Church in Pasadena on May 19th, at 4:00 p.m. ( 500 East Colorado Ave, Pasadena CA )

Chorale Bel Canto, under the direction of Stephen Gothold will be performing Brahms’ German Requiem. Joining the Chorale for this concert, are the Chamber singers of Rio Hondo College (Linda Brown, conductor), and the Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church. Featured soloists are soprano Melissa McIntosh-Landis and baritone Joseph Lim. 

Critically acclaimed for its structure and depth, audiences have long appreciated the requiem's sincere, tender beauty and lyrical compassion. First heard in 1869, composed by an almost 36 year old Brahms, the appeal of this masterpiece spread his reputation throughout Germany and continues to appeal to audiences to this day.  

Melissa McIntosh Landis, soprano, is an accomplished recitalist and concert artist.  She has been a guest soloist from coast to coast appearing in Carnegie Hall with the New York City Chamber Orchestra and on the stage of Los Angeles' Walt Disney Concert Hall.  Based in Los Angeles, she is a returning soloist for Chorale Bel Canto, most recently having sung Mendelssohn's Elijah.

Joseph Lim, graduate of the University of Southern California received the 2010 Encouragement Awards from the Marilyn Horne Song Competition and the Loren L. Zachary National Competition. He has sung Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Silvano in Un Ballo in Maschera, and the title role of Don Giovanni with Seoul Metropolitan Opera, and Budd in Britten’s Albert Herring, and Friedrich in Wagner’s Das Liebesverbot with USC Opera.

KUSC personality Kimberlea Daggy will present a pre-concert discussion of the piece at 3:15 in the Sanctuary.

Eugene Onegin in Pasadena

The lyrical opera Eugene Onegin comes to First Church in Pasadena.

Sunday, March 11th, 2012, at 7:00 PM - The musical genius of Tchaikovsky adds lyrical vibrancy and tragic poignancy to Pushkin’s classic novel in verse Eugene Onegin. Pushkin is the most loved and revered Russian poet and Tchaikovsky, the most lyrical of Russian composers. 

Eugene Onegin tells the story of a young man who foolishly rejects the love of a sensitive, romantically naive girl; then provokes a senseless argument with his best friend – both of which he comes to deeply regret.

Music Director Brian Farrell will lead a cast of talented opera singers in this performance.
